Along with most technology a quick google search will reveal many do it yourself options for telephony. Some will tell you how easy it is to set up your own VoIP or Skype for Business Telephony Platform. It is true that many of your engineers or tech savvy staff could work it out, but your users may not get everything they expect and you may have to recruit additional or replacement staff.
In the last few weeks I have had 3 meetings with people who are now looking to replace their home grown systems with something that works well and enables them to get on with their real business.
The first was an organisation who had replaced an onsite PBX with a VoIP server with SIP trunks to connect to the PBX. Users had new IP phones on the desk along with Skype for Business. The only problem was that nothing connected the Skype for Business to the telephony system. As one user put it, "we thought we were getting a unified system, but it's anything but. Help!"
The second was another business who had replaced an onsite PBX with an open source VoIP server. A frustrated exec said to my colleague, "I just want to be able to do what you do!"
The third was an organisation who had installed a cloud based server to voice enable their Skype for Business. Installation and support proved to be a full time job so that the person supporting it ending up working throughout his holiday. At one point he was hanging off the side of a boat to get a mobile signal whilst supporting a user with a telephony problem.
